16) The Light of Life (John 8:12-52)

Many of the Jews questioned Jesus closely when he made the statement that He is the light of the world. As they question and Jesus answers, I find four threads that run throughout the conversation that are vital for us to understand if we long for eternal life. First, understanding who Jesus is: the son of God and I am; second, why should I listen to Jesus; third, we can know the truth: fourth, what it means to follow Jesus.

17) I Was Blind, Now I See (John 9)

Jesus demonstrates that He is the light of the world by healing a man born blind. This sign powerfully shows that a man born blind received his sight and therefore that Jesus is the Christ, the son of Man and is worthy of our our belief and worship.

 

18) Are We Also Blind?

Jesus, the light of the world, healed a blind man and demonstrated through that sign that He is the Christ. The Pharisees stubbornly refused to understand this truth. Their confident assertion that they see demonstrated their blindness, and provides us the opportunity to evaluate our own ability to see the light. There are four ways in which we can be blind: 1) Denying the Truth; 2) Failing to Grow; 3) Failing to Love; and 4)Trusting in Riches.

 

19) False Signs, Wicked Deception & Strong Delusion

John uses 7 signs in his gospel. Why should you believe in those signs, but not modern miracles? In this lesson we’ll learn that there are genuine and false miracles, and purpose of the miracles of Jesus and apostles was to confirm that they spoke of God. Having accomplished that purpose, miracles to confirm the veracity of a speaker are no longer necessary. God has provided the Scriptures so that we may believe and have life.

 

20) Matters of Life and Death

Throughout John’s gospel, Jesus has repeatedly spoken to us of life, especially eternal life. Yet the his disciples and the people still don’t really understand that he is the Son of God. In this last of the seven signs John shows us that Jesus is truly the Son of God and has power over death. The question is whether we believe. If we believe, we will never die.

 

21) Your King

The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem was a great celebration of the coming of their long promised and long awaited King. We are reminded that with the coming of Jesus is justice, righteousness, peace and salvation in a spiritual kingdom. We should celebrate as they did.

22) What Jesus Knows and Who Jesus Loves

In this familiar passage, we often focus on the actions of Jesus in washing the apostles feet. But Jesus’ teaching in this passage about what he knows is very instructive about our salvation and hope in Him. Jesus knows his origin and destination; his purpose in God’s plan; even how that plan will be carried out through a betrayer. In all of these things, He demonstrates his love for us and commands us to love as he loved.

 

23) Assurance for Troubled Hearts

2 October 2016

Just before his suffering and death, Jesus provides reassurance for the disciples knowing that their hearts will be troubled by what is about to happen. He helps them by teaching them why he is going, where he is going, assuring them that he will come again and that he will provide a Helper and they will share His peace. When our hearts are troubled, we can find great comfort in these teachings also.

24) Jesus: The Way, The Truth, The Life

25) You Are the Branches

Jesus is the True Vine and we are the branches. The Father, as Vinedresser, has a purpose and expectations for each of us: we must bear fruit, abide in him and love one another.

26) I Have Overcome the World

Jesus proclaims to his disciples that he has overcome the world. The world is the Satanic way of thinking that has corrupted this world. Jesus helps us to understand that through the work of the Holy Spirit the world is convicted concerning sin, righteousness and judgment. When we believe in Jesus we can have forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and we overcome the world through him.

27) Authority Over All Flesh

Jesus tells us that His Father has given him authority over all flesh. By examining other statements about authority we learn that Jesus has authority to judge, teach, forgive sins, and His authority is over all.

28) Jesus on Trial

Jesus is unjustly put on trial by the Jews and the Romans. To the Jews, He affirms that He is the Christ and to the Romans He affirms that He is the King. Jesus’ trial reminds us that Jesus suffered like this so that we could be saved.

John establishes that the tomb of Jesus is empty, then uses the experiences of Jesus with Mary, the disciple, and Thomas to teach is that Jesus is alive, that by believing in Him we can have life and become his brothers.

32) You Follow Me! (John 21)

The final chapter of John’s gospel is encouraging. We are reminded again that Jesus fully revealed himself to us, so that we know of his deity, his serving, and his love. He encourages us to follow Him: in faith, in fellowship, and follow his example to be fishers of men, fellowship with one another and tend his sheep.
